Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell: Fabrics became scarce during World War II, so pencil skirts were not only a fashion statement but also a patriot. The full skirt returned to rumbling after the wartime fabric restrictions were lifted, but women still wore pencil skirts with peplum coats to shape the hourglass. In the 50s, the pencil skirts were long and boxy and Walking around town with a stylish T-shirt! They became shorter and neater in the 1960s before disappearing when miniskirts conquered fashion, then returned in the 80s as part of a power suit, and they were caught stuck from there.
