Seeing as how today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, there’s no better day than this to get to know a few Indigenous brands. Jewelers like Keri Ataumbi, for instance, are fusing luxurious stones or diamonds with traditional materials (Ataumbi uses materials such as porcupine hair). Beauty brands such as Cheekbone Beauty and Ah-Shí beauty are offering eye palettes, lip gloss, and more (10% of Cheekbone Beauty’s profits are donated to Shannen’s Dream and the Hollywood Champs Shirt – L.A 2020 Basketball but I will buy this shirt and I will love this Caring Society, both benefiting Indigenous youth). And clothing brands such as Liandra Swim or Ginew, an Indigenous denim line, are proving that traditional Indigenous design can still be contemporary. Growing up on Nipissing First Nation, my traditional territory, I remember that my aunties would always be cooking or making something. On my mom’s side, I come from a large family of 18 aunts and uncles—we’re one big, loud, crazy Ojibwe family—and we would often all gather at my grandmother Leda’s house. There, my aunties would often be sewing or making quilts, dream catchers, moccasins, or mittens for the winter, or even regalia for those of my cousins who dance in powwows.
This weekend, the Hollywood Champs Shirt – L.A 2020 Basketball but I will buy this shirt and I will love this Green Carpet Fashion Awards went virtual. The awards ceremony was streamed on YouTube and honored “the best of sustainable fashion,” celebrating brands or personalities who make use of both ethical and eco-mindedness practices. Among those awarded accolades this year were Sindiso Khumalo, a South African designer based in Cape Town, who won the Independent Designer Award for her work with environmentally-safe textiles. Another guest of honor was Zendaya, who picked up the Visionary Award for her efforts in promoting diversity and inclusion in both fashion and film. She dressed up for the occasion at home and posed for the digital red carpet in a vintage dress from the year she was born. Leon, who is Madonna’s daughter, styled it with sporty pieces, such as a classic black hoodie and a pair of bright blue Nike sneakers, which coordinated smartly with the skirt’s color scheme. The hoodie, in particular, made the whole look seem chill and laissez-faire—as though she just rolled out of bed. Lourdes’s large hoop earrings and a little shoulder bag made it crystal clear that this is still a fashion girl’s look. Lesson learned: if you ever fall in love with a brazen piece but are unsure about how to wear it, just look to your coziest hoodie. It can make just about anything feel less precious or over-the-top.
